SEO secrets part 3 - Keywords

In part 2 we talked about some of the key factors that are common to most search engines to get your website listed at the top of search results. In this part we are going to drill down and look at keywords in particular and the important role that they play in SEO.Search engines need to be able to quickly identify what a website is about and then to be able to access that information before they return results to a query. Looking at it from the Search engines point of view, when you type a phrase like “Networking websites” in Google, there are probably million of websites which use one or both of those words. Sometimes they might be: used together, separately or even in a different order. So you can imagine the trouble and time it would take if search engines had to search all the million of websites to see if any of the words matched and then to order them and then finally to display them back to you in the results section.

But as I’m sure you know, search engines return results really fast, that’s because they don’t st

So what search engines need to be able to do is to classify and rank websites in some kind of way. That’s why search engines Index websites. So instead of storing all the data about a website, they just store the key information as a formula and a link to the websites.

And that’s where keywords come in. There are two types of keywords, the ones that are visible to the user in the Content and the other which are meant just for the search engines, they are Metatags and Title.

Behind the scenes

Metatags

Metatags are the first stop for search engines to learn about what a website is about. Metatags are behind the scenes, meaning that they are encoded into the HTML but not seen by the user unless the user looks at the source code for a website page. The two main Metatags that you should be aware of are : “keywords” and “description”. And they look like this:

meta name=”keywords” content=”swindon, business, networking, events”

meta name=”description” content=”Swindon’s social networking group for businesses”

Make the tags meaningful to your site and try to pick words that you intend use in the content of your site. Also think about what you expect the Search engine user to type in to find your site.

Title

The title tag is one of the most important tags you have, simply because search engines tend to look at these very closely. Usually you would put the same text in here as you would for the main heading of the page in the content. It is quite normal to expect a different title tag for each web page, but less common to expect different Metatags for each web page.

Content

Density

One of the way that search engines try to find out about what a site is about is by taking notice of which words are used more often than others. You need to identify what words you want to closely associate with your site and then try to use them at about 7-8% word density. There are a couple of good tools on the internet to help you to do this, like:

Highlighted keywords

Search engines look more carefully at the words that are formatted (HTML). For example, Words that are used in:

  • Heading tags
  • Bold tags
  • Link tags

Domain names

It can also be useful to use your keywords in your domain name too. If you do then the best way for them to be noticed by search engines is to separate them by dashes. For example: www.business-networking.com

is better than: www.businessnetworking.com or www.business_networking.com.

URLs

Well formatted URLs also can help:www.business-networking.com/swindon-events.html

is better than:www.business-networking.com/swindonevents.html

Thats all for now!

In the next part of SEO secrets we will talk about some of the great tools out there to help you rank your website better in the search engines. In particular we will look at how to compete against the older and more established sites.

SEO part 2 - Key factors

In part 1 of the SEO blog we got an insight into how search engines work and how you can go about informing them of your website’s existence.  In this part we will have a look at some of the key factors that will help you get listed at the top of the search engines.

It’s true that each search engine has their own formula to decide how a website is to be ranked.  It’s also true that search engines change that formula from time to time, google is famous for it. Search engines change formula to prevent some people from cheating.  For example, it was quite well known that google was ranking websites higher based on the number inbound links coming into the site.  This lead to a bunch of cowboys setting up “link farms”.  Link farms are simply collections of hundreds and thousands of web domains with a sole purpose of linking into their client websites to get it a higher ranking.  Google soon worked this out and websites are now penalised for employing this technique and consequently their formulas have got much more sophisticated.

Nevertheless, there are key factors that can help rank your website higher.  They are:

1. The repeated use of relevant keywords

  • If your business is about selling cars then try using the words “Cars” often as you can.  Search engines will think that your websites have something to do with cars and then rank you higher when someone types in “cars” in a search engine.

2. Internal linking between the pages of your website

  • Creat links between your pages, this adds credibility to your website because the Search engines will see that the content is all related.

3. Regularly update and add new content

  • Convince the search engines that your website is active and has upto date relevant information on it.  Search engines love this!

4. Add inbound links from credible sources

  • Search engines have worked out how to get past “link farms” but they are still very interested in the inbound links from relevant websites.  If you are selling cars and your websites has links coming in from mechanics and car enthusiast website then it will considerably help your rankings.

SEO can be an involved process and having an expert on board will certainly make the difference.  But employing these techniques will go a long way to help your website go up the rankings.

Website submission

Hello visitor and welcome to my BizMeet blog.   I am a website developer by trade so I will be sharing some tips of the trade with you on a regular basis.

I will begin with a tip that I know everyone is interested to know about - SEO.  If you don’t know what SEO stands for, I will tell you because it’s an abbreviation that everyone should learn if their business is being represented on the web.  It stands for Search Engine Optimization.  Search Engine Optimization helps your website to climb to the top of the google search engine results. It’s worthwhile for all people to learn the basics of SEO because just knowing a little bit about it can make a big difference.
Firstly, a little bit of background: how do search engines work?  A search engine needs to catalogue where every website is and to know the information that is stored on each site.   This is an ongoing process: a search engine like Google sends little mini programs called “bots” on the internet to gather information on all the websites.  They also check if any updates have been made to the site since the last time the website was visited.  Using this data, search engines can respond to what people are searching for and to know where to direct them when they click on a link.
* Google loves websites that are updated regularly because it means that the site is active and therefore it is likely to have upto date information on it.

Today’s Tip: Submit your site to search engines

So now you know that search engines make regular visits to your website.  But that’s only true if the search engines know that your site exists.  So you have to tell them about your website, this is called “Search engine submission“.  So begin by telling the top 3 search engines about your site, Google, Yahoo, MSN.  Go to the following links and submit your site:
